Fitting a new pump can take time, in some cases you can retrofit using the existing pipework unions. However like everything in this modern world manufacturers like to change things even when they were perfectly fine before they did.! and even if the fittings and threads are the same the height and position maybe different.

Additionally over the years when equipment has been replaced the ability to access enough of the piping to fit anything new maybe a challenge.

Fitting a replacement 115 volt pump that just plugs in certainly is a little easier than having to hardwire a replacement.

Replacing PVC union coupling, means cutting the existing pvc pipe and "glueing" in new fittings. We call this cementing as the "glue" is not actually a glue its a liquid which melts the pipes and fittings together and is known in the trade as welding albeit not the same as welding metal .

You will need at the minimum a Hacksaw, some new pipe (schedule 40 1.5 or 2 inch PVC) a tin of Oatey Blue "rain & shine" cement (wet type) or a similar brand for PVC pipe, as you will be dealing with pipes etc that have water existing in them.

Get the smallest tin, as in Florida the cement does not store well, getting a large tin for a small task is just throwing money away.

Now some people/techs will insist that you use purpose (expensive and messy) made cleaning liquids then priming liquids prior to cementing. However after 30 years of doing PVC pipe cementing I have found them totally unnecessary on new piping. However its always wise to wipe both old and new pipe with something like acetone or Isopropyl alcohol (both cheap) does for me an even better job.
Make sure your pipes are cut nice and square, line up properly, after cleaning coat both the pipes and the fittings with the cement applying liberal amounts in a circular motion to both joints, then fit them together half twist them if possible and leave for at least 30 mins to dry. Make sure you put the two surface's together as quickly as possible as the intial setting of the cement is super fast and after about 10 seconds you wont be ble to move them, it's that fast!.

Be careful with the blue cement, otherwise you'll get it everywhere and never get it off.
Well, it will peel off your hands with no lasting effect, but pipe, concrete etc, forget it no chance.
